What do you think about when I say Gallery Of Smiles? It automatically might make you envisage some kind of vast gallery space filled with variations and artistic representations of smiles. The human smile is a curious thing, we smile supposedly when we are happy. Then, there are times where we smile when we are nervous or scared, or being sarcastic. A smile can be a form of protest in the face of a fear monger. It’s a way to be explicit about the way we feel. So in many ways smiles can be a great main theme of any gallery space because there could be so many possibilities of art works that could be done based around the idea of ‘Smiles’.
This article is about dreams though. Dreams provide us with the most truthful, honest representation of how we see the world. We are helpless in normalising or censoring our sleeping brain in it’s dream state, so it gives us the honest version of our deepest thoughts. I’ve always wanted to explore dreams, because they fascinate me.
I truly have a unique ability to know when I am dreaming, something appropriately named lucid dreaming. It’s great to know when you are dreaming because you are able to control the events of your dream. Normally the first thing I opt to do in a truly free, no limits dream world is to fly. Flying is a symbolic way of demonstrating our freedom and liberation. Flying through the air is a perfect metaphor for free thoughts.
Gallery Of Smiles is a lucid dream I had recently where the artworks came to life. I was drifting through a gallery, obscure in how it looked due to it floating in clouds. The space was filled with different artworks. They were all themed around the same thing, farmers and rural life. Sculptures of horses, paintings of farmers in fields and posing next to cattle. It was peculiar but I was fascinated by looking at all of the artworks. Knowing I could control it, for some reason I opted to use the paintings like they were some kind of interactive tablet instead of canvas and paint.
When I pressed a painting it lit up and started to make a buzzing noise similar to a bee. It seemed to have switched on all the artworks so that they could do the impossible. Not at all that remarkable in a dream state. Then the artworks started to display smiles, gradually the sculptures smiled, the paintings had little men looking out of the canvas and straight at me smiling. It sounds horribly frightening, but I found it curious. Like the dream was trying to tell me that art was some kind of happy force in my life.
I’m confident that all dreams we have do provide us with some kind of moral lesson or message that will help us in our life. This dream in particular, I think, was important in telling me to pursue my creative dreams. So Gallery Of Smiles, I definitely will.
I look at the world and i’m starting to see a wall being built one brick at a time. Each brick is made of negativity, and for now it’s impenetrable. The cement used is a mix of tears from victims of terrorism and hatred because they bind the bricks together and make it stay up. Every day more bricks are added. Sometimes I look and there are days were a brick has cracked or fallen from the wall because there were no tears to keep it on the wall for long, because the victims were brave. Every day I keep watch at this wall, and each time a brick is added it makes me feel sicker. I sigh and have to look away because all it does is make me mad and want to shut my self away from it all. I think that’s the point of the wall, it’s supposed to make people who just want to make the world a better and safer place want to give up. It’s supposed to be an explicit visual reminder of how horrible the world can be.
When we drive bulldozers into it nothing happens, it cracks a little maybe but those cracks are filled in quickly and we are shunned away. It spans the length of the globe and is higher than anything that can be measured nowadays due to many different, well documented factors. So most people look at it like I did and they sigh. They shed a tear and they move on, like all good humans are supposed to.
I realise now though that if a few bulldozers won’t have much effect, maybe a few hundred thousand hammers might. Maybe if we start to work together more instead of being more and more divisive all the time, we can start to break down the brick wall. It doesn’t matter how long it takes or how often we have to take our sledge hammers and smash the wall one hit at a time. Eventually those hundred of thousand people will make dents that can’t be filled in.
We will break bricks before they can be mended or replaced. Then more people will see that taking sledgehammers to the wall is starting to take effect finally. They always assumed that this was just the way now, we have the giant wall dividing us and reminding us of our human vices, but we can finally rid ourselves of it. Then one day, when we have worked and worked and been working on the wall in groups of friends, we will see the wall start to crumble and fall.
Then if they try to build it again brick by brick, the bricks won’t be able to hold together because the victims won’t see themselves as victims of bigotry and hatred anymore. They will be part of the team that succeeded in bringing down the wall. There won’t be any tears to support the bricks to build another wall. So finally we will be triumphant.
I’ve always said that i’d like to buy a forest and live in it. There are several reasons for this which I will explain in this short article. The idea of living in a forest apparently tells people that I basically seem to want the life of a nomadism hobbit of some kind. You know, the usual visions of living in a tree house without basic sanitary products or even electricity, because well, isn’t that the whole point of buying a whole forest.
Yes, one reason a person might buy a forest is for the sole reason of getting away from all the craziness that comes with modern life. Getting away from the horrible news everyday, the judgments of other people and people that feel the need to post every single racist or bigoted thought they have on social media for the adoration of their dumb followers.
In many ways to get away from all this would sound like the ultimate dream for many people who still think in a sane and friendly way. You may realise that in fact part of me does want to purchase a secluded forest for this very reason. Yes, these things annoy me like they should with everyone else, but it’s definitely not the main reason. Those people will never force me to live in a forest because it’s so bad… Not yet at least.
My forest will be partly a place of wholly free thinking. A place to be myself and not be judged by the expectations of our harsh society. It’s hard everyday when you feel like everyone is out to judge you. Although I try my hardest not to look as though I care about the opinions of the general public there are a lot of times where i subconsciously find myself walking quickly with my head down as a way to rush through crowds.
I think that’s one of the hardest things about living on a planet that is overpopulated and you don’t really like hanging around most humans for too long. So the forest will be a place for a select few to hang out with their free thoughts. Free thought, I think, is very important. It allows our creative juices to well and truly come pouring out of us when we let them in a non judgmental and free thinking environment.
Another reason i’d like to buy a forest is the fact that I can build whatever house I want in it. Obviously there are limitations depending on the place I buy a forest in, but I'm quite sure that it will be a tree house with bridges taking you from one tree to another. Home would be above ground, a safer alternative to living on the forest floor, which by the way, will be covered in many, many flowers. Everything built in my forest will contribute to the main aim and point of it’s existence, to provide a safer home to be myself and be creative. A forest of free thinking that I will be happy in.
When you look at the goings on of our natural world, despite their hardship now, there is a lot of freedom in nature. Animals run around a chase each other, breath in the fresh clean air and bathe in the sunlight. They laze around doing nothing but trying to survive. It’s a harsh world sometimes but it’s nice to see this beauty in nature.
It is kind of anthropomorphising animals by giving them the same emotions, or rather hoping they have the same emotions. It’s nice though, to think that the animals we see everyday do appreciate the freedom and happiness it brings. A freedom humans would consider a luxury.
Animals are able to go about in their survival without hinderance or destruction. You never see badgers walking around barbed wire fences like little furry security guards because another badger has the wrong shoes on. You never see a squirrel denied access to a tree because they are the wrong colour of fur.
If you compare this with human beings, it’s quite sad. We are constantly hindered in everything we do. There are certain places we can’t go, buildings we can’t enter. We have to pay in one place or show a card for another.
We are so split now it’s ridiculous. To admit that there are still dictatorships existing on our planet in the year 2017 makes me feel sick. How can we create such restrictive systems when nature is naturally wanting us to be free? There is absolutely no justification for it.
This is the restrictive system we have set up as a way to control others. It has got better though. I mean, we don’t restrict access to certain places based on skin colour anymore but race problems are still as rife in the shadows. Humans are still bizarre in how much they seem to group themselves into different sub cultures and groups.
I wonder if racism and bias is something experienced in nature, I bet you it’s not. I strongly think that this is exactly where we have gone wrong and are still going wrong right now as humans. We judge too much, we are all born and raised to be bias and judgmental about other human beings. We are all odd in that way.
When you compare us to how other creatures live on Earth, we really are the oddest of beings. We go to war over money matters and material objects, judge over cosmetic differences and treat each other like we are all against one another.
We are conditioned to live our life artificially which is why humans have lost the ability to realise what destruction they are causing not just to themselves but the innocent animals in nature that are only now starting to feel like they are less free and happy. We are the ones responsible for extinctions and endangerment of other animals, so it’s remarkable that we still think the same way about our planet as we always have done. When are things going to change because I think it’s already too late to say that we can all be free citizens.
Despite what some politicians and people with way too much influence and money for their own good say, we all actually would quite like to be happy. Our lives are full of bad things and it’s easy to always focus on them and get really down and hate what life is, but we shouldn’t. We don’t have to live this way, we can always easily plan a life of happiness so that we can get over the hurdles of horrid when we get to them. For a life to be considered happy we tend to look at how happy people look in the public eye, when really we should be looking more personally. When we are trying to be happy it’s always going to be a personal journey, it’s not something that one person can fully influence you with as happiness is a personal thing that is different for us all.
Happiness is a broad spectrum because for many people it is a very different thing. Many people would say having lots of money means happiness for a person, whereas there are those, like me, who would say money actually makes people very unhappy and miserable. I’ve never seen a happy person who had billions of pounds. They are all too busy to experience real life. So I thought I would share what I’m doing to plan a life full of happiness because, well, this is my magazine/blog and I think that many people would benefit from being informed of what happiness might look like for different people.
Nowadays we are obsessed with stuff. Everyone just always wanting more stuff even if they’ve got lots of things. Moving into the future we need to try and find happiness in experience rather than things. I’d suggest that you find happiness in sorting through the clutter in your home and considering whether you actually need all the stuff that you have. Focus on just having essential things, not piling your house like a hoarders paradise. Things can be nice, but we shouldn’t be reliant on being so obsessed with things to be happy.
I always question whether people that don’t like animal are actually feeling human emotions. Even the smallest of pets can provide you with lots of happiness to considerably improve your life. Personally I have found that getting a pet has literally saved my life, my dog is one of the most important things I have ever bought, next to my subscription to Vogue magazine.
Surround yourself with only the most forward thinking and positive people. remember that other people close to you have the most influence over how you feel. So naturally it would be a plausible act to actually get rid of the negativity if you want to find happiness in your life. By this I don’t mean if someone is around you with abad mood you should completely ghost them and unfriend them on all social media, no. Just don’t be around people that you find are making your life more difficult or hindering your happiness every day. This could always be applicable to number one too, minimise your peeps!
As a writer there is nothing better than looking at a new page and planning what you are going to write. It’s a space where you can make wonderful words come alive into worlds and characters and settings that make you happy. You can create anything at all that you might think in your imagination.
One of the most troubling problems of a new page is writers block. It plagues even the most prolific writers from time to time who sit staring at a blank page and the possibilities just might not come in the moment. It’s a problem i’ve tended to solve with some simple and light hearted free writing. Write whatever comes to mind.
Think of something out of the ordinary or something you may find remarkably funny but never thought to write about. Funny always appeals to people so you can’t really go wrong. In the case that your free write might not be the best quality, it doesn’t actually matter so much. It might be that your giving yourself a hard time and a few free writes might unblock your brain to find the quality writing you know your capable of.
That’s why writers block is a very frustrating things sometimes for writers, they know the content they think about every day is there to be written down and expressed, but sometimes it just needs that free write nudge to be able to be revealed.
When you have a page with lots of words on it that you have written at another time, you may just stare in confusion. Take a minute to renew and refresh your brain of what you have been writing about and then you can have a fresh start and recovered look at your current writing project.
It’s always advisable if your writing in sections or by page to always look back and refresh your mind of the way you are writing that piece because then you can make sure that it’s all appropriately written in your own original style and tone that people will immediately be able to say ‘oh, yes, that’s by **your name**, he writes in such a consistent and refreshing way’.
After all we write because we want to educate, entertain and inform. That’s ultimately what it’s all about, doing the same thing as great writers before you but in a new and fresh way.
That fresh start that some good free writes will provide not only refreshes you to have to ability to write well and put quality words in place of the empty spaces on that new page, it renews happiness. I find that the best fresh start concerning writing occurs in a brightly lit area.
I have found that a dull writing environment only dulls my writing and the things I write. That’s why I try to always write in a brightly lit area and if I start to get a bit overwhelmed or sad, I take a break from writing and take my dog for a walk. Seeing my dog so happy also makes me happy and provides a new fresh start for me to write.
How many times do we have to remind people that it’s 2017? That times change and views evolve? That humans have always, always evolved with how they think and view different things?
It’s coming to a point now where using religion as a way to skip over your clearly archaic and disgusting views is just a way to open people up to ridicule. It’s actually really embarrassing when I see people confidently on television or on the internet making themselves look like complete fools by saying that something is wrong or can’t be done because it’s in their belief.
Well you know, it’s in my belief that you shouldn’t leave your house or bother speaking to people with a bit of education. Sorry, but that’s my personal belief, and you need to respect that.
I myself am not religious. I believe in nothing and increasingly this is the case with a lot of people. It’s fairly normal for someone to not be religious nowadays because we have more understanding of how the world works and why we might actually be here.
In my opinion and what i’ve learnt in the short time i’ve been on this planet is that life is all about experience and leaving a legacy for the next generation. It’s not about being as horrible and judgmental and destructive as you can in the time you inhabit this strange world. That being said though, make no mistake that I completely understand religious people.
They want to know that there is more and be comforted in something beyond what is fully understood, beyond science and understanding. Religion, to me, is about being a better version of you. It’s being open to learning new profound things and thinking about people beyond yourself. So to me it’s very conflicting when you see religious nuts going around spouting hatred in the name of religion. That’s literally the opposite of what modern religion is about.
NO, you can’t use scripture written thousands of years ago to support your claims to be bias about people, because once again, we live in the modern world where we don’t DIE IF WE A COLD.
We need to start separating ideas of church from personal bias. If you have those beliefs, maybe instead of being proud to hide behind your so called loving religions, you should work on yourself first and foremost.
Work on being a better person who doesn’t have these hurtful ideologies that could potentially upset other people. Again, I'm not a religious person but in no way does that mean I have no morals. I have a lot more morals than a lot of religious people I see nowadays.
What happened to just praising you God in silence. Why does it seem like these religious groups are cultish now? Well, it’s because they kind of are. Modern religion has never been more cult like. because after all, if you gather in a group with extreme ideas that’s exactly what you can be rightfully labelled as, a cult.
Imagine for a moment that life isn’t all about money and material possession. Many people assume this is just the way to live. To make money, work, make money, buy things, consume and fit in. I find it kind of sad really that there is such a loss of individuality to the extent of what is happening right now. Look at Trump, he has become so obsessed with his own personal ideals he’s made it to the white house by brain washing the masses with what they SHOULD do and MAYBE might be in danger of.
It’s simple tactics that can be used on literally anyone who sees the world as this opportunists paradise of money and consumption. Many people seem to think that being different might be going for the unexpected, as in they vote for that horrible idiotic pleb because it’s ‘something different’.
No something different is going against what the horrible thoughts and disgusting beliefs say. It’s not hiding behind ‘belief’ so you can make an argument against happiness and love. ‘SOMETHING DIFFERENT’ isn’t voting for an unqualified candidate because your a rebel and you don’t do what the ‘liberals’ want. These labels as well, they are why I need a cleansing desert personally. These stupid labels that do nothing but separate one race into more and more groups and sub groups.
That’s why I’d advise we all create a space where we can go with absolutely nothing to make us stressed or angry or even accidentally judgmental because of societal conditioning. A nice white sand desert that is not only cleansing but peaceful and calming. It’s a place to realise your purpose and renew your knowledge about things that interest you. Its a place to find hope and strength in any troubles you may have in life. It’s a neutral space with nothing but your own thoughts and anxieties.
Anxieties that can be addressed and worked out. It’s important for us all to have a cleansing desert of our own because its a place we can go no matter where we are. It’s a place that’s in our heads so we can access it any time we want to. That’s a more important asset than most people realise. So if life is starting to stress you out a little as it does with us all, try visiting your cleansing white sand desert every once in a while and see how much it helps you.
What’s the first thing you think about when starting a creative endeavour? Is it how great it will look? how much attention it might get? Is it the amount of money it might let you gain? Most of the time, for a lot of people, these things are seen as the most important aspects of a creative project. It's good to be proud, to appreciate how good it looks, or sounds or feels or tastes or works. It’s even greater to be rewarded for doing a creative endeavour, whether that be through the attention it generates or perhaps how much monetary gain it nets. The phrase ‘starving artist’ is thrown around a lot, because we still live in a society that deems the arts and creativity as a secondary thing. As though it will always be a lesser thing in mainstream society. This needs to change, and to do this we need to start being a lot more conscious in our creativity.
Art always has a deeper meaning, if it doesn’t what’s it really worth to society? Art always works to benefit our society in some way, and it doesn’t always have to be an explicit commentary or a life lesson. It can be something to make you think. It can be something that you look at and it makes you happy for the rest of the day when you have been feeling down. It can be a piece of literature that makes you inspired to write something yourself, and in turn you can benefit society in your own little way too.
People need to realise that it’s not always the most prolific artists who are the most successful. If you persist with your creativity than eventually you will surely catch someones eye. This is something you have always got to think to yourself. That your art is worthy and it has a purpose. The best pieces of art were not appreciated while their creative types that made them were alive or in a state of mind to really appreciate the impact their creativity and genius has. That’s what all art is that consciously seeks to have a purpose and change society for the better, it is genius. Genius because it’s something that will benefit human beings in the future. In turn though, if you seek to benefit from your creativity immediately without really putting much work into it, it will never really have a purpose. Seek to help and change something wrong about our society every time you create and it will turn into something of great purpose.
So the message today is to be conscious in your creativity. I’ve always written things that will spread some kind of message, even in the fiction novel i’m writing and editing at the moment, there are life lessons and messages in it that I hope will make people sit and think one day. Hopefully, and my whole goal in my creativity, my creative writing will one day help at least one person in some way. That will be my life complete.
