In a world where we sometimes lose ourselves in the chaos of every day life it’s peculiar to think that art can have any impact in the changes we make as human beings on planet Earth. It’s odd to think that a sculpture, drawing, painting, poem or any piece of literature could make a difference. Artists have long been seen as people who can create beautiful things, yes, but nothing else. Art is seen as a middle class past time and something for the rich to obsess themselves over. When really, art has always been about informing and social change. Art has always been there to tell the stories that normal conversation and every day life can never successfully get across. It’s breaking through the barriers that we have put up over the thousands of years of creating our modern world.
Even when you look at a simple cave painting on the walls of a random cave in the middle of southern Spain, you would learn a lot from it. Archaeologists would jump at the chance to research such a great find, because the art that the cave people had done would now help modern humans understand what they were like.
This is where we are still going wrong as humans. Not fully appreciating the influence that art has over us. If it was not for art we would not have anything really that we hold dear. Music is not just tunes and words. It has the power to turn senile old people into the people they once were before their old age had taken over their brains, even if it’s just while they are listening to familiar music. This is a beautiful example of how art is being revealed as the wonderful medium for change it has actually always been.
Attitudes are changing. Attitudes are something that can be moulded and influenced should the right person be there to influence and make a difference. When we create art it has always been to do something. A painting of a Tudor monarch now provides the general look and style of the monarch when they were alive. A carved sculpture from the Roman era tells us that they were a lot more liberal than a majority of our planet is in the modern age. They show talent, yes. That will always be a main attractive, aesthetic quality to art. Art for change though is what the future will be filled with more and more. A way for art to influence attitudes that have yet to get with the times. Attitudes are mainly formed by what we see and read and listen to. What is art if not something we see, or read or listen to.
It doesn’t always have to be a masterpiece or a novel or a legendary symphony to change one persons attitude. More and more we see children’s drawings, writing, videos and short films online that rightly and perfectly ‘normalise’ issues like race and LBGTQ+ people. They perfectly and perhaps most importantly, quickly show the view that we are all just human and nothing else should matter when it really comes down to living and letting people live.
