Few things nowadays make me genuinely sad. I mean, i’ve kind of learnt to just get over things that won’t affect my life seriously. There is never much point dwelling on things or taking them personally when it’s something that is not really worth the time or energy.
Then it happened. I logged on my computer and, like everyday, checked to see the big news of the day. I like to keep up to date at all times like that because i’m a media savvy person, sort of. This was news that I could not let pass though.
This was not a small discrepancy or slight inconvenience. No, NETFLIX CANCELS SENSE8. The words struck me like a dagger. I immediately began to tear up and a rage, one like I had never experienced filled me.
I knew that the petitions would come, the trends would be hash tagged and I knew that eventually an statement full of choice words and careful ways of writing things would be used by Netflix as a way of basically saying ‘SHUT UP AND ACCEPT IT, LOSERS’ .
It’s not just another series though is it? Sense8 is something special. Not only is it really, remarkably impressive visually and through its writing and acting, it’s simply marvellous. It’s marvellous because it makes you a better person having watched it.
It normalises what should be normal and doesn’t trivialise what really, in the modern age, need not be trivialised. It’s basically telling the world that LGBT people and other beliefs and religions, ways of living, poor or rich and intelligent or not, are all the same. We are all one in a system. The sensate might be eight people connected but there is so much more to it.
They are a metaphor for us all being the same and connected somehow. So when we commit an atrocity, violence and actions through stupid immoral angers, we are hurting a part of us all. Can you name me another television series that achieves this? I can’t think of one.
There came the joyous message of hope through Netflix commissioning a two hour finale so that the story can be properly finished. For me, as someone who is never happy it seems, this is not enough. The thing is, we might have to forever except this as enough.
It’s the cost that’s the problem it seems. If a series doesn’t have enough audience when it costs so much, what is the point, in the eyes of a money making media company, in making the expensive series. Thats why for now, even though you may be like me and wanting more of SENSE8, maybe it’s time to just wait for what is to come with the two hour finale.
Let’s battle for more after that, when we see what the amazing sisters do with the series for the commissioned two hours. I think it’s going to be a master class into why SENSE8 will forever be a part of everyone who had the opportunity to watch it and be a better person because of watching it.
